Preparing for a Boudoir Photography Session

We get it. This is all new to you and it’s hard to know where to start. Many women, have not had a day of pampering and have worn beautiful underwear for years.

This is our handy dandy guide and suggestions for getting ready for your boudoir photography session. so you get the most out of it.

🩱 What to bring and wear:

We do not provide underwear for obvious health and hygiene reasons. So you will need to go through your underwear drawer or go shopping ( oh no !! 😆)

At a minimum, we suggest bringing the following:

  • One-piece set (bodysuit, teddy, etc ) black ALWAYS works for everyone if you are not sure. Darker colors are great for flattering the body.

  • Two-piece set bra and undies plus hold-up thigh-high stockings or stockings and garter belt. Same again …. black is excellent for this sort of thing.

PLEASE: Get whatever you want, this is what we suggest if you have no idea where to begin 🙂

Avoid garments that are too tight. They dig into your skin or can create the dreaded muffin top.

Also, if you wish we also encourage :

  • If you already have a lingerie collection, please bring along as much as you wish.

  • High heel shoes,. They make calves look amazing and extend the legs.

  • Lastly, if you have Pearls, long necklaces, gaudy costume jewellery, etc., please bring it all along.

  • If you are into bondage and have a collection of restraints and other items, please do not be shy…bring them along.

  • Anything that is important to you. For example, I had a lady bring her ballet shoes, which we incorporated into the photographs. This can be anything, whether risque or things that only mean something to you.

🛍️ Shopping Tips

Unless you are an experienced online lingerie shopper we would suggest going to a good Lingerie Shop. Some of the lingerie we have seen from online stores such as Amazon often are not as good as they look in the photos or they are weird sizes. The staff at a good lingerie shop can help you by measuring you up and making excellent suggestions for your body type.

Some good places to shop:

Bras and things: They have a really nice selection these days.

Honey Birdette: They have gorgeous luxury lingerie.

City Chic: The place to go for plus-sized ladies.

🤔 Try on the garments before coming to the studio

If it’s been a minute since you last tried on your collection, it is worth revisiting and making sure you still like what you have.

It is especially worth trying on stockings to make sure they work for you.

Some stockings can be too small and will roll at the top or they could be too long. If you have decided on a garter belt it is worth practicing connecting them to the stockings. PRO TIP: Once you get garters connected and they look great… it is a good idea to leave it all hooked up and get out of them like taking off pants.

✂️ Cut the tags of lingerie

They stand out like a sore thumb in photos.

💦 Drink Water

Start now! Please make sure you are hydrated; it’s good for the skin and will help you with the session.

𐄷 Weight Loss

Please do not go on a crash diet to lose weight. At the risk of sounding like we are bragging… we have a black belt in making people look amazing. We use lighting, photo techniques, and posing to make you look your best. To be honest, losing a kilo or two is not going to make much of a difference from a photography point of view.

🙆‍♀️ Stretching

It is worth doing some light stretching before you come. It will help with the session and also assist in feeling amazing after the session. This is because we want to get your body in the best possible posture for beautiful photos.

💅 Nails

Treat yourself to a manicure .. it means we can incorporate the hands in the photos. If you can not have nails for workplace or sporting reasons, please ensure they are clean and tidy.

☀️ Fake Tan

In general, our strong recommendation is not to get a fake tan. They rarely look great in the type of photographs we will be doing, and we feel there is genuine and unique beauty in everyone’s natural skin tones.

There are exceptions to the rule, of course. One that springs to mind is a swimming instructor who has impressive tan lines, and also the chlorine bleached her skin.

If you must get a fake tan, please get it done by a professional about a week before the photography session. Please do not do it yourself. It is too easy to get the tanning liquid on the palms of your hands and the bottom of your feet and risk looking like an oompa loompa.

💆🏽 Facial & Waxing

Avoid a facial and waxing two days before the session. Your personal experience will dictate how you respond to these treatments.

If the lingerie is new, it is worth trying it on and checking if you need to wax (if, in fact, you do) a little more than usual.

💄 Preparing for professional hair and makeup

This is easy. Just have clean, dry hair and do not wear makeup when coming in on the day of your boudoir photography experience.

👗 What to wear when coming in for your shoot

Loose-fitting clothes and loose-fitting underwear, or better yet, go commando! This will avoid leaving lines/ marks on the body when we start the photography session.

🍽️ Please give yourself plenty of time and have a light meal

A light meal will help you with energy for the photography session and help you from feeling overwhelmed.

💃 Prepare to have fun

The constant thing I hear is that my clients all tell me that they had a blast. We know that you are nervous and excited, but I promise you will love the experience.
